George Spillmann moved from Washington to Northern California and
immediately started to take his boat out on Folsom Lake to enjoy the
cool, clean waters. Spillmann was no stranger to lakes and rivers coming
from the Pacific Northwest, and has continued that passion for getting
out on the water in his new environment. Here are three boating
essentials you need to complete your next nautical voyage:

- Life jackets. One of the first items that all boating enthusiasts get is a life jacket for everyone regularly using the boat. George Spillmann spent many summer afternoons on the deck of his father’s boat in Washington and always wore a life jacket. Now, he makes sure he and any guests he has are safe on the water with a snug-fitting life jacket.
- Working radio. If you ever run into trouble from inclement weather or find yourself stranded on the waters for any reason, having a radio to call for help or to warn others is a must. Make sure your radio works in all situations so you can use it in an emergency.
- First aid kit. Boats are full of opportunities to cut or scrape yourself. In the interest of your crew’s safety, plan to dress minor wounds with a well-stocked first aid kit with equipment to bandage cuts and scrapes and sunscreen to protect you from sunburn.
